June Newsletter

June is officially here and that means warm days, rainy afternoons, and cool evenings! Our Engle Vineyard is weathered and tough in its years, and it soaks up the warm sun gladly. Some even say that the dry desert climate is what makes our grapes so unique and authentic. As the grapes continue to grow, the team is working on improvements and experimentation in the farming side of things! We planted 3,000 new vines in Engle to introduce new varietals we can grow and hopefully enjoy in a few years! Some of these new vines were planted with different root stocks, to see if they are even more drought tolerant and cold resistant.

Another project in the vineyard we are working on is inoculating the new vines with mycorrhizae, a fungus which grows in association with the roots of a plant in a symbiotic relationship, to help colonize good bacteria in the soil at the root zone. In other news, when the vines start to grow, the deer and antelope take that as a dinner invitation and munch on the leaves like its their own salad bar.

This month's newsletter gives you a sneak peek into what happens behind the scenes at Noisy, and is packed full of information about featured products, events and what's to come!

2019 Chenin Blanc

tart pear • honeydew melon • lemon verbena

This crisp and light-bodied varietal takes a modern spin as these grapes produce a very lean, minerally style Chenin Blanc that pairs perfectly with a relaxing and warm afternoon.  Featuring Steve and His Current Favorite Wine

Steve is coming up on his two year mark at Noisy Water in Ruidoso, NM. He is a jack of all trades and bar tends at the Midtown Ruidoso location and the Enchanted Vine Barn. Steve also contributes to the team behind the scenes in the actual wine and cider production. Steve loves working and living in the quiet mountain town of our beloved Ruidoso and spends his time fishing at the local lakes and perfecting his golf game in the breezy fairways at our local courses. His favorite part about being on the Noisy team is getting to be involved with the tight knit community and sharing a quality experience with his co-workers and visitors from all over.

Steve is cool, calm and collected and the chillest guy to kick back with while wine tasting. His friendly and loving personality paired with some amazing wine makes for an unforgettable experience at the tasting rooms.

Steve's Current Favorite Wine

2018 Petite Sirah

blueberry • subtle pepper • vanilla

Our 2018 Petite Sirah is a crowd pleasing favorite and is known for its bold appearance and its big tannins. This is Steve's favorite wine for its striking flavor profile and versatility when it comes to pairing it with food. He recommends pairing the 2018 Petite Syrah with smoked brisket in particular, as the woodsy smoke notes of the brisket compliment the big, bold and juicy flavors of the dry red wine.

Its deep purple hue immediately catches the eye as you are met with the vivid aroma of bright blueberry. Subtle pepper notes open to tannic, yet juicy and jammy mid palate and a rich vanilla finish.

🍇 Bung Holes: What they are and why we love em' 🍇

A bunghole is a hole bored into a barrel and capped with a large cork-like object called a ‘bung’.  It is essentially the hole which lets you get quick and easy access to the wine inside.

Fun Fact:

How do we know when it's time to retire a barrel? Well, we stick our nose in it! After a barrel has been emptied and cleaned our winemakers and crew smell all the barrels. It's a day full of smelling bungholes 😉

Wine Of The Week - 2019 Pinot Noir Rose

“What’s YOUR favorite wine?” I often get asked by customers in the tasting room as they gaze at the rows of bottles on the shelves. I usually pause; this question is like being asked which of your children is your favorite. The answer usually depends on the kind of day you’re having.

Lately, most of my days point me in the direction of Noisy Water Winery’s 2019 Pinot Noir Rosé. Made with grapes from our own Forbidden Desert Vineyard (which seems to be particularly favorable to Pinot Noir), this wine is a perfect companion to just about every occasion. Whether it’s meeting with friends for a casual lunch or a more formal dinner or just lounging in front of the TV binge-watching with snacks, this rosé provides the finishing touch.

2019 Pinot Noir Rosé

Nuances of strawberry limeade and citrus zest fold into a melody of floral rose and magnolia on the mid palate, creating a sharp and bursting finish.

$27.00

Twelve hours of skin contact during the maceration process gives just the right touch of dryness while imparting a beautiful, rosy sunset shade of pink. Bittersweet berries on the nose, with a touch of earthiness and character from the land where the grapes are grown, smooth out into a crisp finish of citrus and a burst of berry flavor. Refreshing and easy to sip, it pairs well with everything you can think of!

“Accept what life offers you and try to drink from every cup. All wines should be tasted; some should only be sipped, but with others, drink the whole bottle.”
— Paul Coelho

🍇Grafting Grape Vines🍇

Grafting is a propagation technique that allows us to alter the grape variety of the existing vines, which already have a developed root system, without uprooting and replanting the vines. This can be an economical way of changing a whole vineyard rather than re-planting. We start grafting vines before the bud begins to grow, so in late February for early varieties and early March for later varieties.

There are many grafting techniques that can be used. This one is called the cleft graft. It is for larger diameter vines and the scion must be dormant. There is a five step process for the cleft graft:

  1. Cut off the top of the vine about 30 minutes or so before grafting.
  2. Split the rootstock with a blade or chisel.
  3. Hold the split open and prepare the scions by cutting one end to a “v” shape.
  4. Place one scion on each side to fit with the cambium.
  5. Tape the split area together and use grafting compound to seal the splits to keep excess moisture out and seal moisture in.

Wine Of The Week - Rojo Caliente Reserve

Warmth and color… what better way to describe one of our most unusual and intriguing wines?

But first, pop quiz time: What is the official state question of New Mexico? Well, if you’ve dined in almost any Mexican restaurant—Old or New—in the state, you know the first question you’re asked after you name your meal choice is, “Red or green?” And never one to shy away from our New Mexico heritage, Noisy Water Winery offers the option in wine form!

Rojo Caliente—“Red Hot”—red chile wine is our ever-popular counterpart to our Besito Caliente green chile wine. But not content enough with our regular red blend and Chimayo red chile, our winemaker decided to ramp up the heat a little! Though the same blend, Rojo Caliente Reserve doubles down on the amount of Chimayo red chile in this specialty wine. If you enjoyed the “red hot” candies of your youth, you’ll appreciate this “kick in the glass”!

Rojo Caliente Reserve

The contents of this bottle are spicy, and guaranteed to make your guests love you or hate you! (should you be kind enough to share)

$24.00

Hints of sweet berries mingle with the spicy tongue-tingling heat of red chile in this wine that pairs wonderfully with an appetizer of various cheeses or a decadent dessert that features chocolate and sweet fruit. What better way to spice up any late-spring celebrations than with this delightfully different wine? Stock up now to heat up the coming summer months!

“May is the most beautiful month of the year, a month alive with warmth and color.”
— Lillian Berliner

Featuring Cris and Her Favorite Wine

Cris joined the Noisy Water fam 6 months ago and is ready to meet you at our Red River Tasting room! Red River is known for its outdoor adventure opportunities and tourism centric activities like skiing, hiking, horseback riding, and amazing restaurant options. When Cris is not wine tending, she spends her free time walking the shopping district and trying out all the good eats in town. Her favorite part about being on the Noisy Water team is the atmosphere of the tasting room where you can sit back, chill and enjoy the breezy mountain air at the large patio and deck!

Cris fits right in; she's funny, friendly and connects with you to make your trip to the Red River tasting room unforgettable!

Cris's favorite wine is the 2020 Divine Intervention Moscato. He particularly like the light, CRISP, & fruity qualities of this sweet while and is the best to sip on with light meals.

Made from the Muscat grape, our 2020 Divine Intervention Moscato is a sweet wine that teases the taste buds with a subtle surprise of bright fruit. This wine will leave your tongue feeling invigorated and craving for more!

2020 Divine Intervention Moscato

apricot • sweet honeydew • orange blossom • honeysuckle

This divine wine radiates a golden hue and has an aroma of rich apricot and honeysuckle. Sweet honeydew and orange blossom flavors meet at the mid palate as delicately floral and tangy notes create an easy finish.

  $24.00

PAIRING DIVINE INTERVENTION MOSCATO

Cris recommends pairing the Divine Intervention Moscato with chocolate or salmon salad and says that this wine mixes well with ginger ale and lime sherbet ice cream for a punch bowl party mix!

🍇Pairing Wine With Cinco de Mayo Foods 🍇

Noisy Water Winery was founded in New Mexico, so our roots run deep within Mexican culture, as it is the most prominent heritage in our beloved border state. Today we celebrate the resilience, strength and unity of this heritage by sharing our favorite wine pairings with Cinco de Mayo inspired foods.

TACOS & WINE

2019 Nuevo Verde
$27.00   $24.00

When making fish tacos, more likely than not, your fresh fish tacos are going to come dressed in a sauce or vegetables and herbs; for this, our 2019 Nuevo Verde balances the spicy flavors of the tacos with its spritzy and acidic flavor profile.

When making carne asada or ground beef tacos, the 2017 Zinfandel's rich, fruit-forward palate and robust tannins pair gorgeously with the fat and spice of these darker meats.

GUACAMOLE & WINE

2018 Pinot Grigio

Cinco de Mayo isn't complete without fresh guacamole, so we suggest pairing avocado dishes with a zesty white wine such as the 2018 Pinot Grigio. The mouth watering acidity in the wine cuts through the sweetness and fattiness of the fruit, making the pairing a total palate pleaser.

$27.00

EMPANADAS & WINE

2017 Malbec

The 2017 Malbec is a good choice to pair with apple or other fruit empanadas for dessert because the mocha, molasses and tobacco notes of this dry red blend beautifully with the crisp crunch and the sweet jammy filling of this classic dessert.

$44.00   $36.00
