February Newsletter

Happy February you wine lovers! Did you know February comes from the Latin word februa, which means “to cleanse.” The month was named after the Roman Februalia, which was a month-long festival of starting fresh new beginnings that took place this time of year. We are right on time, because this month is all about getting in gear for a new growing season ahead! This month's newsletter gives you a sneak peek into what happens behind the scenes at Noisy, and is packed full of information about featured products and events this month!

Our Tough, Acclimated Vines at Engle Farms

February is typically the snowiest month on average in the United States, and it turns out that snow is one of the secret ingredients that produces a bountiful harvest!

Vines are still dormant, but we are beginning to prepare the vineyard to replant new vines at Engle by improving irrigation systems, preparing to start pruning our vines within the next few months before bud break, and tuning up farming and harvesting equipment. One of the ways we are improving our irrigation system is by adding magnetics to our water drip lines that considerably promoted fruit growth last year. The magnets have increased water retention in the soil, reduced hard water clogs in drip heads and allowed the vines to absorb larger amounts of hard to use minerals in the soil!

What else is going on at Noisy?

  • Feel free to come see us or to call in an order for pick up! As of current, we are able to have wine tastings outdoors at 25% capacity!

  • We fell in love with holiday markets in Italy, where the streets are covered in string lights, holiday music is playing, local vendors are bundled up selling hand-crafted products, and holiday shoppers stroll through the rows of the market with a drink in hand. We were so inspired that we have recreated this magical experience right in our little village tucked away in the mountains of New Mexico.  The market is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays at Enchanted Vine!

  • Enchanted Vine and our tasting rooms across New Mexico serve as cozy little getaways during the Winter, and especially during ski season! Gather around fire pits at the Enchanted Vine in Ruidoso and sip on some mulled wine or bundle up under the heated patio at our tasting rooms for a romantic Valentine's date!

Team Favorites

Featuring Jessica And Her Favorite Wine

Today we are shining the spotlight on Jessica, who works at our tasting room in Ruidoso, New Mexico. Jessica's favorite wine is our Bearly Legal, a semi-dry red wine that is so good it shouldn't be legal! The name of this wine immediately makes it likable, but the flavors of this wine is what sends it over the top! Jessica is mostly a dry red wine drinker, but when she craves something sweet, Bearly Legal hits the spot because its not overly sweet and is a perfect middle ground wine as a dry wine drinker.

PAIRING BEARLY LEGAL

Jessica enjoys drinking Bearly Legal with sharp cheeses like Asiago and a dill pickle spear! Now that's what we call a developed palate! Jessica says that this wine is delicious chilled or at room temperature and is best sipped on during movie nights or around a campfire.

Inspiration

Hard to bear? We don’t think so. But one sip and you’ll understand what we went through to get this wine into your glass (legally).

Taste

Delectable fruit cocktail on the front, well-defined notes of wild cherry in the middle, and a smooth, creamy vanilla finish appreciable by even the most novice of wine drinkers.

Cheers!

Wine Of The Week - 2018 Petite Sirah

Wine Of The Week - 2018 Petite Sirah by Amy Bennett

Petite Sirah has a long, convoluted history. It was born in the 1870s, created by Dr. Francois Durif, a French nurseryman who wanted to create a grape that had the flavor of Syrah and the mildew-resistance of a varietal called Peloursin. He succeeded and named it “Durif”, but the grape never became a major French varietal. The grape migrated to the United States where it became a blending grape that did well in the California climate. The name “Durif” got lost along the way and someone decided that—due to the Syrah-like flavor and the small size of the grape—Petite Sirah was a good name for it.

But there is nothing small about the flavor of this particular wine!

Noisy Water Winery took Petite Sirah grapes, grown in the southern part of the state, and produced a wine with explosive dark fruit and snappy pepper on the nose; a rich, jammy blueberry middle; and a smooth vanilla finish from 15 months in French oak. The result is a full-bodied wine with strong tannins which pairs beautifully with steaks or any beef-centered meal. Try it with prime rib for a holiday dinner!

This ain’t our first rodeo with this particular varietal… Noisy Water made a Petite Sirah a few years back that was big, bold, and delicious and this one is even better!

A Guide To Pairing Wine & Cheese

THE SCIENCE

Science tells us that pairing foods and beverages that taste similar to one another improves the experience and that the similarities compliment one another, but the opposite can also be true! The fat in cheese and the acidity in wine compliment each other because of that very fact- they are opposites! The different compounds of cheese and wine creates a balanced and pleasing "mouthfeel," which refers to the way foods feel in the mouth. No wonder cheese and wine pair so perfectly!

Did You Know Red Wine Is Actually Good For Your Health?

Scientific Research Tells Us:

  • Polyphenols, (plant compounds) found in wine, can have a significant effect on the gut microbiome which can in turn reduce cardiovascular disease risk
  • Just 1 glass of red wine can increase healthy bacteria in your digestive system, similar in the way kombucha or yogurt can.
  • The polyphenol content in wine can have a positive effect on your immune system! As good bacteria grows in your gut, your immune health will also strengthen.

A Few Of Our Favorite Immune Boosting & Heart Healthy Red Wines:

Wine Of The Week - 2019 Nuevo Nouveau

As was typical of 2020, the days ran together with the result that I totally missed a very important wine holiday that occurs about the third week of November: Beaujolais Nouveau Day.

Wait, what does all of that have to do with Noisy Water’s Nuevo Nouveau? Well, Nuevo Nouveau IS Noisy Water’s proprietary Beaujolais Nouveau, which is typically the first wine of the harvest, meant to be drunk immediately after production. This is because, back in the old days of wine making, by the time harvest season rolled around, the wine from the year before had already run out… and folks like to have wine! So around the middle of November, after the first fruits of the harvest had been crushed and fermented, the red wine made from Gamay grapes in the Beaujolais region of France were ready to grace the tables and keep people happy until the other wines had time to age and be ready for drinking.

2019 Nuevo Nouveau

Commonly known as Beaujolais Nouveau, we have put our New Mexican spin on this fun Proprieter Grown wine.

$24.00

Noisy Water’s 2019 Nuevo Nouveau has special meaning for our winemaker: after taking on a neglected vineyard in what appeared to be an inhospitable region of New Mexico and breathing new life into dying vines, the first fruits of what came to be known as the Forbidden Desert vineyard became our first proprietary wine. Instead of Gamay, Pinot Noir grapes were used to create what we affectionately referred to as our “Thanksgiving wine”—released in time to celebrate Thanksgiving and Beaujolais Nouveau day, with a bright burst of ripe berries on the palate, medium bodied and low on tannins but with a spark of acidity reminiscent of cranberries.

Though it’s been a few months since our “new” wine was released, it has mellowed a bit but still calls to mind ripe fruit on a sunny day and can make any meal a reason to give thanks!

“For everyday, we like Beaujolais, Grenache or Syrah, and we like a lot of it! It's a family tradition: We would never consider having a meal without wine”
— Jacques Pepin, French chef

2019 Nuevo Verde

Harvested from the unforgiving Forbidden Desert Vineyard these beautiful white grapes made this a memorable and easy to drink wine. This is a great wine to enjoy while picking up a new hobby or to just chill out with after a busy day.
