Wine Of The Week - 2016 Curtain Call by Amy Bennett

 

2016 Curtain Call is the name given to Noisy Water Winery’s Bordeaux-style blend of dry red wines. “Bordeaux” refers to a wine from the Bordeaux region of France and is primarily made most often from Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot or other red grapes, although there are also white Bordeaux varietals. Despite John Cleese’s tongue-in-cheek comment, “Claret” is actually what Bordeaux wines are called in Britain.

A blend of six different varietals, each showcasing its own characteristics in this spectacular blend: Malbec, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Petit Verdot. Though dry from start to finish, it has a velvety middle and is silky-smooth at the end, with dark berries and vanilla as an intriguing introduction. Full-bodied with rich tannins, it’s definitely the star performer at an elegant dinner or a simple evening repast.

Curtain Call is definitely a prime example of our winemaker’s talent and creativity. Wine Of The Week - 2019 Tighty Whitey White

I had a hard time finding a “tighty whiteys” quote, but one look at our new label(s) will put this quote in perspective!

Too often, people think of fine wines in conjunction with formality. Fine china, gourmet foods, and tuxedos. And very intimidating. That’s why the advice is often given that, when one is facing a formidable audience or opponent, you can relax and feel more confident if you picture them in their underwear. “It made him realize his audience was human. I mean, you can’t be very frightening in your underwear!” (so said Dad-of-the-Century, Mike Brady to daughter, Jan, in “The Brady Bunch”!) So what better way to introduce wine drinkers to a previously daunting dry white wine blend than to picture the winemakers—and friends—in their underwear?

Noisy Water’s 2019 Tighty Whitey White is the third incarnation of this off-dry white. This time, we made it a proprietary blend of Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay, using grapes from our own Forbidden Desert vineyard in Engle, New Mexico. A light floral nose invites you to sip into something more comfortable: pear and honey mingling in the middle and finishing with soothing, yet spicy, hints of chamomile and ginger. Crisp and light-bodied, it’s an easy-to-drink wine for just about any meal or occasion.

Ah, what would Noisy Water Winery be without Jo Mamma’s line of wines? Our flagship wines of Jo Mamma’s White and Jo Mamma’s Red sweet table wines have won us many loyal followers (including yours truly) and, in recent years, our red and white have been joined by a few new “sisters”, most notably Mango Tango and Very Berry, which have become extremely popular in their own right, with very distinctive flavor profiles.

Then along came little sister, Sweet Rosé, and demanded her own moment in the spotlight.

Wine Of The Week - 2018 Pinot Grigio

 
When we were kids, nothing tasted better on a hot summer day than an ice-cold glass of lemonade. Now as an adult, think of Pinot Grigio as lemonade for grown ups!

Because Noisy Water is located in the southern part of New Mexico, we know all about hot summers, even though we’re in the cool pines. Our 2018 Pinot Grigio makes the heat more bearable with its crisp acidity and refreshing citrusy notes. You can almost feel the crunch of a juicy green apple with the first sip. 

Pinot Grigio is the second most popular white wine in America and probably outsells every other wine during the hotter months of the year. Born in France as Pinot Gris (“gris” referring to the grayish-blue color of the grape skins), it migrated north to Switzerland then to northern Italy where it became known as Pinot Grigio. It became the most popular white wine in Italy, then the most popular imported white wine in the US. Thanks to our southern New Mexico climate, we have a domestic Pinot Grigio that can rival any import!

Its crisp acidity pairs well with any kind of decadent, buttery dishes, seafood in particular. Pair it with creamy, rich cheeses to start off a meal or enjoy it with a light lunch of salad with grilled chicken. My favorite way to enjoy it is when the sun goes down and the coolness of the evening echoes the chilled Pinot Grigio in my glass. I raise my glass and offer a toast to the friends and loved ones sharing the bottle. I take a sip and….

Wine Of The Week - 2018 Demigod

 
“Demigod”, by definition, is half human, half god, and Bacchus is the Roman god of the grape-harvest, winemaking, and wine. And certainly, there is something heavenly in a glass of Noisy Water Winery’s 2018 Demigod!

Cabernet Sauvignon is generally a dry red that is rich in tannins and, to a certain extent, a little intimidating to novice wine drinkers. Demigod, however, is true to its namesake and loves to be loved (according to the dictionary, “demigod” is also defined as one “who is greatly admired and respected”) and therefore is a little easier on a wider range of palates.

Semi-dry and medium-bodied, 2018 Demigod is a wine for all times and for all tastes. Not as dry as most Cabernet Sauvignons, it bursts with juicy red sweet cherries and dark fruits with a hint of vanilla and a smooth finish. It makes an excellent wine for the warmer summer months when stronger tannins are not as desirable. Demigod has become one of Noisy Water’s most popular wines and it’s easy to see why!

Wine Of The Week - 2018 Big Legs Red

 
If there is one thing Noisy Water Winery is known for, it’s for making great wines. But it’s also known for not taking itself too seriously. This touch of whimsy, coupled with a passion for making good wines to suit every palate is what led to the blend called Big Legs Red.

“Legs” is the term used to describe the streaks of wine that run down the inside of the glass when you swirl the wine. They represent how much alcohol is in the wine. While Big Legs Red doesn’t have an unusually high amount of alcohol for a red wine, it’s a fun take on a common wine term and Big Legs Red is nothing if not fun!

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Barbera grapes, at first glance, it would seem that Big Legs would be an extremely dry blend. However, it sidles onto the nose with a dark red fruit bouquet, teasing with a slight spiciness, before stepping into a jammy berry middle with a finish as smooth as silk.

What? Were you expecting Miles’ Pinot speech from “Sideways”?

If, as Miles asserts, that Pinot Noir “…can only grow in these really specific, little, tucked away corners of the world. And, and only the most patient and nurturing of growers can do it, really.” then that tells you all you need to know about Noisy Water Winery’s winemaker! (There, happy now???)

Pinot Noir grapes grow well alongside Chardonnay grapes (they are both grown in our Forbidden Desert Vineyard in Engle, New Mexico), and Pinot Noir can be made into a red, white, rosé, or sparkling wine. And mark your calendar, August 18 is Pinot Noir Day! 

Grown in one of the most inhospitable regions of the US for this particular varietal, Noisy Water’s 2017 Pinot Noir is not your typical Pinot Noir. Fuller bodied with stronger tannins, it has an undertone of warm spice mingling with dark cherries, segueing into a jammy, vanilla tannic finish. Dry, but smooth, it pairs well with aged cheeses and crisp apples or a rich cut of meat.

Pinot Noir is one of the world’s most popular light-bodied red wines, but Noisy Water’s more robust vintage is sure to gain a new following for Pinot Noir from drinkers of drier red varietals. Wine Of The Week - 2017 Winemaker's Select Syrah

 
As most of you know by now, I am not a huge fan of dry red wines. My appreciation of them is growing slowly, mainly due to the gentle coaxing of my husband, who loves dry reds, and the wide variety of dry red wines produced by Noisy Water Winery. Many have a tannin structure that is smooth and respectful of palates such as mine.

But then along comes a dry red wine that refuses to be polite, refuses to wait to be asked in. Instead of a well-mannered knock at the door, it comes crashing through a wall like the Kool-Aid man… without the sugary sweetness.

Syrah, also known as Shiraz, is one of the darkest, full-bodied red wines in the world. Depending on the climate where it is grown, it can be full of dark fruit flavors of blackberries and boysenberries with a rich, jammy finish, or it can snap with the spiciness of clove or licorice or pepper. In our 2017 Winemaker’s Select Syrah, Noisy Water has hit a perfect balance between the simplicity of Grandma’s homemade jam and the complexity of rich tannins and a subtle spiciness.

Syrah is a wine made for rich, bold meals. Pair it with a steak dinner and make sure there are bleu cheese crumbles on the salad AND on the steak (trust me on this!) Barbecue and spicy adobo sauces build up a chicken meal to match the tannins in Syrah. Go crazy and indulge in a rich, dark chocolate dessert with a glass of Syrah. But whatever you do, be as bold as the wine. As the poet Homer wrote, “A decent boldness ever meets with friends.” 

And nothing pairs better with a great wine than great friends!

Well, what did he know? (and I never really got into “Brideshead Revisited” anyway! ) As usual, Noisy Water takes the prevailing knowledge and turns it on its head!

Although actual “port” must come from Portugal in order to be labeled as such, wines that are aged with brandy and produced here in the States are commonly distinguished as “port-like” or “port-style”. It is typically served after dinner as a dessert wine because of its higher alcohol content and sweet finish, though it can be an intriguing wine to serve with a cheese course as well.

Besito de Coco is a port-like wine, fortified with brandy and embellished with a hint of chocolaty goodness. Unlike many port-style wines which are fuller bodied, richer, and heavier than most wines, with almost a syrup-like consistency, Noisy Water’s Besito de Coco is lighter bodied, still rich in flavor, but not as heavy on the tongue. It makes a fabulous dessert after a heavy meal if paired with fresh strawberries or raspberries, or it can be served as an accompaniment to a cheese course to balance the nutty saltiness of cheeses such as Gruyere or Asiago or sharp Cheddars.

No longer the wine once reserved for gentlemen to consume after a lavish dinner in a dark study while enjoying cigars, port-like wines are enjoying a surge in popularity by younger drinkers who don’t always want a big fancy dessert after dinner. Of course, it can be added to a cup of coffee to add another flavor dimension and help warm you up on a chilly night. But sipping on Besito de Coco on a starry summer night while making S’mores over an open campfire is something anyone of any age can enjoy and appreciate!

The more I hang around Noisy Water Winery, the more I learn about wine and wine-making.

I learned that white wines can be made from both white and red grapes, because only the juice of the grapes is used, but only red grapes can make red wines because the skin is in contact with the juice during fermentation. Simple enough to learn! 

Then I learned about skin-fermented wines, also known as “orange” wines, which is the process used in making Noisy Water’s 2019 Skin-Fermented Chenin Blanc.

Chenin Blanc is a versatile white wine grape. It can be made into sparkling wine; it can be light-bodied and crisp; it can be aged in oak and give Chardonnay a run for its money. Noisy Water’s winemaker went in a different direction and fermented the wine with the grape skins, giving the wine an amber-orange hue that gives it the name “Orange Chenin Blanc”. The result is a white wine with a fuller body and stronger tannin structure, yet crisp and refreshing at the same time.

Harvested from 30+ year old vines from Noisy Water’s own Forbidden Desert Vineyard in Engle, NM, our 2019 Skin-Fermented Chenin Blanc introduces itself with pear and stone fruit aromas and leads into a tannic finish that is soft and creamy, and yet has a refreshingly smooth citric finish.

While this wine pairs beautifully with lighter summer fare from the grill, such as salmon or shrimp, it’s light and easy enough to drink on its own. Just add good friends and a warm summer evening and you have a perfect pairing of wine and life!
